Playwriting From Inception to Stage: Writing Theatre for Children & Developing New Plays

See tickets below

In this workshop “Developing New Plays” Broadway composer and playwright Scott Elmegreen invites you to explore the creation of new works through lively discussion and a series of collaborative writing, acting, and directing exercises. For all artists, students, and theatre appreciators looking for a better understanding of how new works advance from the kernel of an idea to a fully realized theatrical production.

Scott Elmegreen is a New York City-based playwright, composer, and author. His play Straight was a New York Times Critics' Pick for its "smart, bracing writing brimming with thought-provoking observations”; it premiered off-Broadway and has been translated into four languages for productions around the United States and world, including San Juan, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Mexico City, and Stockholm. His music and orchestrations have premiered on Broadway and HBO in the Drama Desk and Emmy Award-nominated Colin Quinn Long Story Short, directed by Jerry Seinfeld, as well as in numerous national tours, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway shows.

Scott also wrote the book, music, and lyrics for theatrical adaptations of The Magic School Bus (national tours in the United States and China), the NY Times Bestselling series Ivy + Bean (“A wry, rollicking show with infectious spirit and a breathless energy that thoroughly enchants” – NY Times; Off-Broadway; national tour; pub. Theatrical Rights Worldwide), and the NY Times Bestselling Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy picture books (Bay Area Children’s Theatre premiere; national tour). Other shows include Vote for Me: a Musical Debate (Off-Broadway and London productions), College the Musical (NYMF Award – Best Lyrics; pub. Dramatic Publishing Company) Thucydides (Samuel French Play Festival Winner; pub. Samuel French), and Awesome Allie, First Kid Astronaut (pub. Theatrical Rights Worldwide), which premiered Off-Broadway before touring in planetariums and museums across the United States.

In the first workshop in this series “writing Theatre for Children” (See for tickets), theatre-goers of all ages are invited to participate in an ensemble-building, empathy-broadening workshop on the process of creating theatre magic for young audiences. Join Scott Elmegreen (author of the theatrical adaptations of The New York Times Bestselling series "The Magic School Bus", "Ivy+Bean", and "Ladybug Girl") in exploring the unique challenges and joys of igniting the imagination of children.
