The Languages of Wearing: Touch, try, and think about fashion beyond the visual. Experience the joy of dressing up!
Presented by: Fashion at Otago Polytechnic
From: Ōtepoti | Dunedin
The Fashion team from Otago Polytechnic's School of Design invites you to explore The Languages of Wearing, an interactive installation designed to fundamentally shift how you think about the clothes you wear. This installation will encourage people to think about the clothes they wear, and have fun dressing in some challenging fashions exhibited. We are open for two hours at a time, drop in for 10 minutes, or longer!
While fashion is typically critiqued from a visual standpoint, this exhibition encourages visitors to step outside the visual and concentrate on the sense of touch and the experience of wearing. We present an array of challenging, yet delightful, fashions that provoke thought on how clothes feel rather than just how they look. We encourage you to to try on these unique garments.
This is your chance to rediscover the pure joy of dressing up. As one previous participant noted, the installation is like a "lolly shop for any fashionista", offering a moment of "such freedom & joy".
If you wish, you may anonymously note down your thoughts about wearing these challenging fashions. Your insights will be added to the ongoing research* undertaken by the Fashion Design team at Otago Polytechnic, helping us to better understand the non-visual language of wearing. Come, have fun, and help us redefine what fashion can be!
* This exhibition is part of an ongoing research focus on wearers' interactions with fashion. The researchers are all members of the Fashion team (senior students and staff) at Otago Polytechnic. The researchers applied for and received ethical approval for the research entitled: Languages of Wearing. Reference number 031, Te Maru Pūmanawa (School of Design/Food Design Institute), Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin, New Zealand. Ethical approval is granted for the project for a period of three years, 1 April 2025 - 1 April 2028.
