pas de trois. noun: a dance for three people.

1860s France: ballerinas are the rats of society. Three dancers claw for a chance to step into the sun as the Palais Garnier’s next prima ballerina, while fighting to preserve their friendship. But with so much on the line, can loyalty ever hope to compete with the instinct to survive?

Pas de Trois is a one-act play that explores the complexities of female relationships in a world where artists must kill or be killed. Written by Penelope Hare and directed by Jordan Wichman, this world première is designed and performed entirely by Ōtepoti-local emergent creatives.

Set to the paintings of Edgar Degas and brought to life by the music of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, the performance combines beauty, desire, and vulnerability in each of its three distinct, complex characters. Pas de Trois is built around one central anxiety: which is stronger, love or the limelight?

Knife-edge dialogue, ballet-infused theatrics, an intoxicating play of light and shadow... Here at the Palais Garnier Theatre, you can have it all – for a price.

À bientôt. See you at the ballet.
