As an artist working with organic materials, I sense the need for vigilance in the natural environment surrounding where I live and walk each day. At first thinking that I was in a pristine place and gradually unfolding in a cascade of knowledge that it was far from clean and cared for in terms of the land, water or air. My works in progress responding to the beauty of where I am as well as the what happens below the surface. The premise of my works is the relationship between the cycles that occur in my papermaking practice. The spinning of the pulp, as it is agitated on its way to becoming paper, aligns with the spin of nature and life and the cycle of action and reflection.

Lesa Hepburn is a multi-disciplinary artist producing two and three dimensional works, installations, prints, and small edition multiples. Hepburn uses botanical fibres in a sustainable arts practice, working with available plant materials, recycled materials and low impact processes.

Hepburn lives in Dunedin, New Zealand/Aotearoa learning more about local plants, fibres and her environment to ensure her practice remains sustainable and culturally respectful. Hepburn was born and spent much of her childhood in Malaysia and is a practising professional artist in Australia and New Zealand. A fibre work by Lesa was the winner of the 2020 Southland Art Awards and her work was selected in the 2021 and 2022 Pattillo Whanganui Arts Review (at which Lesa received a Merit Award in 2022) and the 2022 Parkin Prize.
