Dunedin Fringe Festival

‘Wilderpeople’ star to co-host Opening Night Showcase

1 March 2017

Fringe is just around the corner! There’s only a week until The Polson Higgs Opening Night Showcase, where 25 acts will take to the Town Hall stage for a two-hour extravaganza of music, comedy, theatre and all-around spectacle. Beloved local entertainer Tahu Mackenzie is set to return as one of two Showcase MCs, joined this year by Oscar Kightley, star of Sione’s Wedding, bro’ Town and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

We’re thrilled with our two MCs. As a writer, actor and commentator, Oscar Kightley has been part of some iconic New Zealand shows and films. He’s coming to town especially for our opening event and we reckon he’ll have as much fun being part of the Showcase as we’ll have hosting him here – and we can’t wait to see him on stage with Tahu!

The 2016 winner of the ‘Special Contribution to Festival Life Award’ will reprise her role as Showcase MC, bringing her exquisite costumes, hysterical comedy and powerhouse vocals to the 2017 Showcase.

We have just a few tantalising teasers about the 2017 Showcase artists to wht your appetite. Award winning Kiwi comedian Jeremy Elwood (TV3’s 7 Days, Pulp Comedy) will perform, as will acclaimed UK comic Mary Bourke. We can also now reveal that the Showcase will include two exclusive musical moments – the first ever public performance of an excerpt from Alive In Berlin, ahead of its world-premiere on 14 March, and a closely guarded mystery appearance from an iconic Dunedin Sound musician, one of the artists that inspired the international multimedia collaboration, Anything Could Happen.

As for the rest, you’ll have to be there to find out for yourself!

See you at the Town Hall!
