In Once Upon a Dance, Jan Bolwell and Mona Williams draw on their extensive background in dance and theatre. Jan has written and performed in five plays, all of which have toured throughout New Zealand. Her latest play Taking the High Ground, about mountaineers Freda du Faur and Lydia Bradey, had its premiere season at BATS Theatre in Wellington in December 2017. Jan directed and choreographed Destination Beehive 2017, the hit political satire at Circa Theatre in Wellington in July 2017. She is also the director and choreographer of Crows Feet Dance Collective, Wellington’s unique community dance company for mature performers. Jan has just completed a successful national tour of her solo play Bill Massey’s Tourists about her grandfather’s WW1 experiences with Arts on Tour New Zealand. Mona grew up in Guyana where she studied ballet and also learned traditional Guyanese dance. She did further training at Stanford University, California where she was a Fulbright and Ford Foundation scholar. She studied contemporary dance with renowned Californian teacher Anna Halprin. Mona has a passionate interest in story-telling, writing, and Caribbean dance. She has travelled extensively as a story-teller internationally and throughout New Zealand. Jan and Mona bring their two different dancing and theatre worlds together in Once Upon a Dance as they share their stories, dance together, challenge each other and generally have a good time. They hope as well to entertain their audiences!
