Bare Essentials are a jazz, swing, rhythm and blues trio of considerable standing in the Dunedin music community. This is their first appearance at the Dunedin Fringe Festival, and we are very excited to have them! Their set will cover a history of popular songs dating back to the 1920’s that have become jazz standards. Featuring: John Meddings – guitarist/vocalist. John is a musician whose talent for fine tones, balance and technical ability has led to prominent artists seeking his expertise. John has played with Annie Crummer, Sir Howard Morrison, Ray Wolfe, Jacqui Fitzgerald, Suzanne Prentice, Don McGlashan, Barry Saunders and Ray Columbus. As a session musician, John has played on a diverse range of albums and soundtracks for television. Away from the stage, John has established himself as a leading stringed instrument repair technician. Recently retired from guitar tuition both privately and at the Otago University, John now enjoys arranging great compositions for Bare Essentials. William Davidson – vocalist - percussion. William worked professionally as the vocalist with the NZ 70s’ pop group 'The Kal-Q-lated Risk.' The group released several singles and two albums gaining the finals of the Loxene Golden Disc Awards in three consecutive years. The group extensively toured NZ for several years, and through its recording company, HMV was introduced to Decca Records UK moving to London and recording one album and again touring and supporting various UK artist. 'Bare Essentials to me is a wonderful thing – with little else than an acoustic guitar, maraca and saxophone we endeavour to play precise rhythmical movement, working with dynamics and textures to create wonderful music.' Tony Stephens – saxophonist – vocalist - percussion. Tony loves to play music. He’s lucky enough to play with two of his all-time favourite muso’s; William and John. Tony plays Tenor Saxophone and percussion and loves to sing. As William has a voice unmatched locally or nationally, Tony (along with John) love to create wonderful three-part harmonies; complementing the tight and polished Trio. Tony’s virtuosity and musicianship give spark and flare to the trio.
