This is spoken poetry for social change, a show in which the performance will be driven by a ravenous hunger for a better world. In Pissed Off! Passionate and Hopeful local poet Kyra and a handful of other Dunedin spoken poets will explore timely social issues such as mental health cuts, sexual violence, climate change, wealth inequality, students’ rights, consumer culture and gender, racial and queer justice. This will be an angry, hopeful, poetic rant that fuses art, academia and activism. There will be word play, rhythm and imagery filled to the brim, to delight the poetically passionate and social commentary to satisfy the politically conscious. This is poetry to inform, to motivate and to validate. Kyra performs their poetry regularly in Dunedin on the university campus, at the Vogel Street Party or in local cafes. Their work has been called “powerful” by Sara Hirsch the UK Slam Poet Champion of 2013 and “challenging, confronting, often very funny, and never dull” by Kerry Lane, the co-founder of the Dunedin Slam Collective. Kyra’s anti-capitalist comedy poem ‘Capitalism is About to Give Birth’ is a crowd favourite with the Dunedin Slam Collective where they perform monthly. If you wanna laugh, cry, get angry and be entertained then come be Pissed Off! Passionate and Hopeful too.
