First held in 2000 in conjunction with the first Dunedin Fringe Festival and including a 2012 one-off in post-quake Christchurch, the biennial Lines of Flight festival of experimental music celebrates its tenth season in 2017. As New Zealand’s longest running experimental music festival, for sixteen years LoF has showcased many of this country’s most critically acclaimed sonic adventurers. While performers have a common purpose in pushing musical boundaries, their music extends from disparately established genres such as rock, jazz, classical and electronica. From the founding, Lines of Flight has included projected films by experimental filmmakers, integrating intentions through vision and sound. Line-up for Friday March 10, 7.30pm: Smith Eye Motoko Kikkawa/Joanna Osborne Bruce Russell BYG (Alastair Galbraith/Robbie Yeats/Mick elBorrado/Reg Norris) Please note that all shows will start promptly. Lines of Flight 2017 comprises four shows at three venues: Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the Athenaeum theatre in the Octagon, and the Anteroom art space in Port Chalmers. Each show features four different musical acts, a mix of local, national and international performers — many accompanied by experimental films. Highlights include French electronic musician Jerome Noetinger — a major international figure in his field, the visually spectacular Wellington group Orchestra of Spheres — recently returned from a very successful European tour, and the Auckland free jazz duo Jeff Henderson and Hermione Johnson who provided two of the standout performances in the 2013 and 2015 Fringes. Also on the bill are Rachel Shearer, Jonny Marks, Alastair Galbraith/Robbie Yeats/Mick Elborado, Teen Haters, Eye, and more. Presented by the Metonymic Trust.
