Dr. Marigaux presents his Amazing Gospel String Band joined by the Sounds Nor’Easterly choir for an evening of earthy rocking gospel tunes and abstract harmonies. Take a recipe like this – some of Dunedin’s finest string players, a solid core of rocking gospel, mix in a subtle twist of modern “classical” music, and then lay the whole thing out over some solid bass grooves, and you’ll get a combination nothing quite like anything you ever heard before. The good doctor bellows out the tunes, while the violins and viola sweeten up the background; the bass and cello lay down the grooves, and the choir will set your soul on a path straight to heaven. Music that takes you on a journey through the sombre dark of the night and back out into the sunshine. Music that’s sometimes quiet, calm, and thoughtful — and sometimes high energy acoustic music. Music that might not be amplified, but it sure is electric. Dr. Marigaux is the stage name of Phil Davison. Phil’s friend, Ralph Bennet-Eades passed away a while back, and when Ralph was dying he came up with the idea that he’d made a deal with God that, if He would let Ralph live, Ralph would only play gospel, and forsake blues. Phil promised him that he would join him in playing gospel. Well, Ralph’s deal fell through and he died two years ago, but Phil’s promise to sing gospel has been running around in his mind ever since, and for the last two years Phil has been working towards this gig. It’s gonna rock your soul!
